In 2006 we committed €200 million to support the Jacobs University Bremen in Germany over the next five years. It is the largest-ever donation to a private higher educational institution in Europe. This commitment is a powerful example of Productive Youth Development in progress.
The concept behind the university is unique in Europe. More than 1,000 young people from over 85 nations currently study at the Jacobs University, which started its academic operations in 2001 as the International University of Bremen (IUB). Classes are made up of young people from all over the world, living together on an English-speaking campus, working in teams and acquiring academic and ‘soft’ skills to help them excel in their careers. The Jacobs University prepares graduates to contribute responsibly to finding solutions to the challenging problems of our modern world. In doing so, it opens up solid career opportunities for them in the globalized labour market of the 21st century.
Out of gratitude to the benefactors and in order to further promote the university’s distinctive profile on the international stage, the boards of the IUB have decided to change the university’s name to Jacobs University Bremen.
